I studied organ in South Hampshire initially with Malcolm Saxton, and subsequently in London with Anne Marsden Thomas at St Giles Cripplegate in the Barbican. Fairly early on I was one of a group of young organists playing at both the Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals in Portsmouth.
On moving to Birmingham, I became organist of SS Mary & Ambrose Church, near the cricket ground in Edgbaston. Here I provided music for all the main services, and also organised and presented orchestral concerts and solo recitals.
Subsequently, I became organist and choirmaster at St. Bartholomew's, the parish church of Hampton-in-Arden, to the east of Birmingham. Here I also organised and conducted orchestral and choral concerts, and a Festival of music and readings at the church.
Following my time at Hampton-in-Arden, I became organist and choirmaster at St. John's, Sparkhill, in inner city Birmingham, where I was concerned to support and expand the small choir, and to encourage music making at the church.
In 1994 I became Director of Music at All Saints', Kings Heath - to the south of Birmingham City Centre. Here I had responsibility for planning and providing the music for all the main services: weekly Sung Eucharist, Choral Evensong, and occasional services. I was the director of the robed choir, and the All Saints' Chamber Choir, which I founded. I also had oversight of the church music group, who provided music for the Family Services, and for the All Saints' Youth Choir, who rehearsed under the direction of their own choir director. The musical establishment was completed by the Organist Emeritus, and two sub-organists.
During this time, I was appointed Diocesan Music Adviser for the Diocese of Birmingham in succession to Rosemary Field. Duties included teaching and coaching Diocesan Organ Scholars, encouraging and advising parish musicians and their clergy, providing voice coaching for Lay Readers in training, planning and providing music for special Diocesan services, liaising with other musical bodies (for example, the Royal School of Church Music), and reporting on the general state of church musical provision in the Diocese to the Diocesan Synod's Board of Ministries. As Diocesan Music Adviser, I also designed and implemented, with the support of the Bishop and the Diocesan Board for Ministries, an accreditation scheme for church musicians in the Diocese.
I have led workshops for organists, and I'm particularly keen to encourage those who, for one reason or another, come late to the instrument.
During Birmingham's year as European City of Music, I served as one of the City Council's Music Assessors, assessing and reporting on the performance and organisation of various musical groups who were provided with grant aid by the City Council.
I later moved with my wife to Helmsley, in North Yorkshire, where I was appointed Director of Music at the Parish Church there. Again I was concerned to encourage the small choir, and to raise the profile of the church in the musical life of the area. I gave several organ recitals on the fine Harrison & Harrison organ in the church, which gained an increasing attendance.
Additionally, I was appointed Assistant Regional Director of the Royal School of Church Music, with responsibilities covering the geographical area coterminous with the seven Anglican Dioceses in the North East of England. These responsibilities included general encouragement and coaching of musicians in that area, demonstrations of choir directing, evenings devoted
to exploring new music, examining under the various RSCM schemes, advising clergy, PCCs and musicians on all matters connected with church music, teaching Diocesan Organ Scholars in the York Diocese, etc..
At the beginning of November, 2009, I took up my appointment as Director of Music & Organist at St Andrew's Chippenham in Wiltshire.
